U.S. President Franklin D. Roosevelt, British Prime Minister Winston Churchill & Chinese Leader Chiang Kai-shek meet in Cairo, Egypt to discuss measures for defeating Japan. France officially recognizes the independence of Lebanon, releasing the imprisoned Lebanese government.  The Royal Air Force (RAF) begins the bombing of Berlin.  U.S. troops land on Abemama Atoll, Gilbert Islands.  Lyricist Lorenz Hart died in New York at age 48.
