U.S. 1st army wins battle of Aachen (Germany). General Douglas MacArthur stepped ashore at Leyte in the Philippines, 2 1/2 years after saying “I shall return”. The Yugoslav cities of Belgrade and Dubrovnik were liberated by Soviet and Yugoslav troops. Liquid-gas tanks in Cleveland, Ohio, explode killing 135 with 3,600 made homeless.
