This Day in History: 1944-09-14

The Japanese cargo ship “Junyo Maru” begins transport of 6,500 Dutch, British, & Australian captives as well as Indonesian slave laborers to Mauro. (The ship was torpedoed and sunk on September 18, 1942 by the British submarine H.M.S. Tradewind with over 5,600 killed).  Gulpen, Meerssen & Maastricht in Netherlands  freed.  The “Great Atlantic” Hurricane hits New England: 28 people die.  US 28th Infantry Division occupies 1.5 km of Roscheid, Germany.  US 4th Infantry “Ivy” Division pushes through West Wall “Siegfried Line”.
