Belgium’s Emissie bank closes.  Future U.S. president George H. W. Bush was shot down by Japanese forces as he completed a bombing run over the Bonin Islands in the Pacific. (Lt. (jg) Bush was rescued by the crew of the submarine USS Finback; his two crew members, however, died.)  Holocaust diarist Anne Frank sent to Auschwitz concentration camp.  U.S. leaders meet in Belgium.
