German occupiers impose 72-hour work week.   Admiral Lord Louis Mountbatten is appointed Supreme Allied Commander in SE Asia.  Red Army under General Nikoli Vatutin recaptures Achtyrka (Okhtyrka), Ukraine.  U.S. forces overrun Japanese forces and liberate New Georgia in the Solomon Islands.   The 10th NFL All-Star Game in Chicago: The college All Stars beat the Washington Redskins 27-7 with 48,471 in attendance.
