An Allied air raid on a train in North Netherlands kills 32.  German Field Marshal Günther von Kluge vanishes for one day; he killed himself on August 19th in the aftermath of the attempt to assassinate Adolf Hitler.  Operation Anvil: Allies land on French Mediterranean sea coast.  Operation Dragoon: Allied troops land in Provence, France.  The U.S.  Army XII Corps enters Le Mans through Orleans. U.S. 7th Armor Division reaches Chartres, France.
