This Day in History: 1942-08-11

Pierre Laval, Prime Minister of Vichy, France publically declared that “the hour of liberation for France is the hour when Germany wins the war. ”  Nazi SS begins exterminating 3,500 Jews in Zelov, Lodz Poland (continued through September 30th).  Almost 1,000 Jews are taken from the Mechelen transit camp in Belgium.   British aircraft carrier HMS Eagle torpedoed & sinks.  Lt. General Bernard Montgomery makes landing on Gibraltar.
