Vice-Admiral Gunichi Mikawa of the Imperial Japanese Navy lands at Guadalcanal, Solomon Island. Dmitri Shostakovitch’s 7th Symphony performed in Leningrad.   Mahatma Gandhi & 50 others are arrested by British authorities in Bombay after the passage of a “quit India” campaign for civil disobedience by the All-India Congress (Ghandi was released in 1944). CBS radio broadcasts the debut of “Our Secret Weapon.”
