German counter attack at Avranches fails. In Berlin, Nazi “Peoples Court” judge Roland Freisler presided over the trial for many of the defendants arrested after the failed July 20th plot to assassinate Adolf Hitler.  The U.S. 3rd Army reaches the suburbs of Brest, Brittany.  IBM dedicates the first program-controlled calculator, the Automatic Sequence Controlled Calculator (known best as the Harvard Mark I).
