Italian Fascist dictator Benito Mussolini resigns.  U.S. President Franklin D. Roosevelt announced an end to coffee rationing, which had limited people to one pound of coffee every five weeks since it began in November 1942.   Operation Gomorrah: The British bombing of Hamburg created one of the largest firestorms raised by the Royal Air Force (RAF) and the United States Army Air Force (USAAF) killing 42,600 civilians and wounding 37,000 in Hamburg, Germany and practically destroying the entire City.
