Hideki Tojo was removed as Japanese premier and war minister because of setbacks suffered by his country in the war.  Operation Goodwood: British assault east of Caen.  Allies air raid on railways at Vaires and Paris, France.  Royal Air Force (RAF) Mosquitos attack Cologne & Berlin, Germany.   British air raid on German convoy SW of Heligoland, Germany.  British troops occupy Bourquebus hill range in Normandy.  Polish troops under General Władysław Anders occupy Ancona,  Italy.  U.S. troops capture the Normandy town of St Lo.  Arne Andersson runs world record 1 mile (4:01.6).
