This Day in History: 1945-07-16

The U.S. exploded its first experimental atomic bomb as part of the “Manhattan Project” at the Trinity site in the desert of Alamogordo, NM.  On the same day, the heavy cruiser USS Indianapolis left the Mare Island Naval Shipyard in San Francisco, California on a secret mission to deliver atomic bomb components to Tinian Island in the Marianas.
