U.S. troops occupy Biak during Battle of Biak, New Guinea. British 14th Army frees Imphal Assam.  Opening day of the Soviet Union’s victorious Operation Bagration against the German Army Group Centre.  President Franklin Roosevelt signed the Servicemen’s Readjustment Act of 1944, more popularly known as the  “GI Bill of Rights”.
