Doris “Dorie” Miller, a cook aboard the USS West Virginia, became the first African American to receive the Navy Cross for displaying “extraordinary courage and disregard for his own personal safety” during Japan’s attack on Pearl Harbor.  Hitler orders 10,000 Czechs murdered.  Italian army begin siege of French western Fort Bir Hachim.  Reinhard Heydrich, Nazi “Deputy Reich Protector of the Protectorate of Bohemia and Moravia” is shot and mortally wounded in Prague during Operation Anthropoid.
