British cruiser HMS Trinidad torpedoes itself in the Barents Sea.  British destroyer HMS Campbeltown’s planned explosion in St. Nazaire, France killed about 400 Germans.  German submarine U-585 sinks.  The bombing of Lübeck was the first major success for the Royal Air Force (RAF) Bomber Command against Germany and a German city.
