The three-day Battle of the Bismarck Sea ends with the Australian and American Air Forces devastating a Japanese navy convoy. Bethnal Green Tube tragedy in London where 173 people were killed in a crush while attempting to enter the bomb shelter (believed to be the largest loss of civilian life in the U.K. during the war).  F. Ryerson & Cohn Claues’ “Harriet” premieres in New York City.
