U.S. Marines on Iwo Jima captured Mount Suribachi where they raised two American flags (the second flag-raising was captured in the iconic Associated Press photograph and the Marine Corps War Memorial sculpture).  The 2nd Dutch government of Pieter Gerbrandy forms in London.   Canadian troops occupy Kalkar, Germany.   Operation Grenade: General William H. Simpson’s 9th Army crosses Ruhr.
