The SS Normandie, a former French liner being refitted for the U.S. Navy at a New York pier, caught fire (it capsized early the next morning). Japanese troops land near Makassar, South Celebes, Indonesia. Philadelphia “Phillies” change nickname (temporarily) to “Phils”.
