This Day in History: 1945-01-30

A Soviet submarine torpedoed the German Transport ship “MV Wilhelm Gustloff” off Danzig in the Baltic Sea with the loss of an  estimated 9,400 people, most of them refugees; 1,000 people survived.  Adolf Hitler marked the 12th anniversary of his appointment as Germany’s Chancellor with his last public speech in which he called on Germany to keep resisting until victory.   American Rangers and Filipino resistance fighters liberate over 500 Allied POWs from the Japanese at Cabanatuan, Philippeans.
